Track 1: No One's Gonna Love You Like I Can - Laura Marling
No one's ever quite put it that way...
And we’re off!
A good mix starts off with a statement. Sometimes I like a brief instrumental, or some dialogue, or something quirky to get the party started. Not all statements are loud, though, and so sometimes it’s nice to start gently and ease us all in. Such is the case with No One’s Gonna Love You Like I can.
This was not going to be the first track for the longest time, but Laura Marling’s new album Patterns in Repeat came out last week, and although this was the second single released in August, I hadn’t caught up to it until now.
While it’s true that many of my mixes start with grander sounds and gestures, I love the simpleness, almost brittleness of this. The album and song were written for Marling’s daughter, and the special connection a mother has with her own child.
I really loved Marling’s last album, Songs for Our Daughter, written before she was born. This is even more folky, gentle, and peaceful, but the two make for excellent companion pieces.
Think of this as a prologue of sorts, and I dedicate it to my own family. Sometimes i feel like they don’t get me. I worry they think I have too many projects (and to be fair, I do). Doing things like this blog makes me happy, though, and so do they. So it seems fitting for a song about the unique love of parenthood and family relationships kicks this whole thing off.
