Track 13: Back There Now - Charly Bliss

Said 'I'm Fine' to hear the words out loud...

Charly Bliss didn’t release an album for five years between the absolute masterpiece (yes - I said it) of their sophomore album Young Enough and this year’s Forever. The time did not do them any favors, as anticipation mounted ith time, but to be fair, following up Young Enough was always going to be a challenge. Forever is…fine. It’s a fun pop album that’s awfully front loaded, but it doesn’t find the balance between their blistering bubble-grunge debut Guppy and the synth laced heartache of Young Enough. Kinda like Imaginal Disk, it kinda feels like it goes on…well, Forever, despite its relative brevity.

But enough shit talk. I love this band. I love that they take chances. I believe they have another Young Enough or two in them, and if Forever is a slight misstep, they’ve deserved one. And it still has fucking bops on it, like this single.

Eva Hendricks barely ever writes songs about relationships that go well, and Back There Now is no different. She chronicles missing someone who was really not good for her, and her voice is duplicated to sound like a cheerleading chorus in the catchy breakdown, chanting, “A boy like you would hang me if I gave you the rope.” It sounds so fun you get the appeal and the danger mixed together, and it ends before you risk temptation to think too much about going back. Probably for the best.
