Things are bad. I'm sad and pissed. Here's a playlist.

Hope in a Hopeless World

Share

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably looking around the world and saying - what the actual fuck?

It’s one thing to acknowledge the inevitability of late stage capitalism, it’s a whole other thing to watch it unfold before your eyes in spectacularly stupid fashion. And yet here we are, with the world’s richest man sending teenagers to dismantle what shreds of stability we have left to pump blood into his liquid assets. This video from Kat Abu on Blue Sky sums it up in 60 seconds.

And the democrats? Well, there’s been lots of pearl clutching and press conferences, but also lots of “what can we do’s?” Because that’s what the democrats do. Say “what can we do?” When we’re in power, it’s impossible to do any good. God forbid Biden attempted to slam through executive orders at the frenzy and pace that Trump did that protected Trans rights for ever, or got rid of this idea of a stupid fucking boarder, or made Roe V Wade law. No, see, they want those things taken away so they can continue to fundraise and offer the chance of getting it back. They like this imbalance so much because it gives them something to do. While they might be the lesser of two evils, the worse of two evils are literally fucking Nazis. So it’s not quite damning with faint praise as much as it’s damning them all to the worse hell Pinhead from Hellraiser has to offer.

So yeah, I’ve written my reps and sat around feeling sick (literally - got the flu) and useless aside from doing my job and making some art. And then I made a playlist because music helps me cope.

Here it is. It’s filled with Black musicians, white musicians, latinx musicians, gay musicians, trans musicians, nonbinary musicians - you name it, because fuck fear of people different from you. I will fight and die for the right of someone different from me to live a normal life. Unless you’re a fascist. You can fuck off and die and die fucking hard.

This starts out sad, trying to find some hope in a world that is rapidly decaying from the outside in and the inside out. And then it gets angry. Defiant. Pissed. It gets ready to fight, because I truly believe fighting is the only hope we’re going to have. There’s classic bangers on here because, well, solidarity. Strength in numbers. I want to imagine people shouting these along with me.

And then it gets sad again, because …well….as an early song says, it’s still us versus them and they’re winning.
