Track 18: Denial is a River - Doechii
I moved on, dropped a couple of songs...
Continuing with the theme of introspective hip hp, Denial is a River finds Doechii literally talking to herself in the form of a therapist, alternating between a classic come up and a serious psychological reeckoning. “Honestly I can’t even fucking cap anymore, this is a really dark time for me,” Doeshii says after listing off a series of accomplishments, immediately before her “therapist” accuses her of taking too many drugs, which Doeshii confirms in her next killer verse.
Alligator Bites Never Heal might be my favorite hip hop record of the year, and it’s hard to pick just one track to share, but the beat, playfulness, humor, and introspection on Denial just puts it over the top. That said, I highly recommend the whole album - it’s the goods.
