Track 2: Funny Guy - ScHoolboy Q

And now for something completely different, the opening song from ScHoolboy Q’s 2024 release Blue Lips, a might strong hip hop record if I do say so myself. This track kicked off a majority of my 2024 playlists. Why? I love the dizzying strings, the Mario impression (“It’s a me, Groovy-O” - Groovy-Q is one of SQ’s handles), the repeated chants demanding to “Bring the dope, bring the hoes, bring the money bags in” over a slow, funky bassline ripped from a Checkmates Ltd slow job. It’s weird, soulful, funky, and hints at an adventure about to be kicked into overdrive.

Really the whole thing sounds like Willy Wonka and the Weed Factory, right before Q guides us down the chocolate river, deeper into a cloud of dope, hoes, and money bags, except his psychedelic Gene Wilder rant features non sequiturs about hip hop culture. “I love you but you suck,” Q chuckles, and that really encapsulates my feelings about 2024 in a nutshell.

This probably won’t be for everyone, but that’s partly the point of the mix. And you can always skip. But for those of us down? Bring the dope, bring the hoes, bring the money bags and play on.
