Track 30: The Feminine Urge - The Last Dinner Party
Do you feel like a man when I can't talk back...
The Last Dinner Party formed in 2021, released a chart-topping single in 2023, and a debut album this year (Prelude to Ecstacy) that sounds so assured and confident it feels like their fifth album rather than their first. With a sound that’s hard to pin down (indie art rock with a theatrical bombast?) but also incredibly familiar, it’s no wonder they’ve captured the attention of so many fans, critics, and journalists.
The Feminine Urge is one of the standout tracks on their debut, and it examines generational trauma between mothers and daughters wrestling with the same bullshit aspects that come standard with being a woman. It would be much easier to resist the urges if there weren’t for certain expectations that get past down from mothers and mothers mothers, not to mention society and culture as a whole. Alas, what else to do but make a kickass, bombastic track that takes all that nonsense and makes it something you want to sing along to.
